What presents are you expecting on Christmas Day? Is it an Ipod, play station, designer clothes, DS or an expensive gadget of some sort?
What happens if you don’t get the present you were dreaming off?
It might be a number of reasons why you didn’t get what you wanted, one being that the recession has made us all tighten our belts, so it’s wise to accept what you’ve been given, graciously - even though it’s the most unfashionable waistcoat you have ever seen in your life!! You never know you may get the chance to wear it to a fancy dress party in years to come.
As a parent we must remember that children;
“…will only take presents for granted if we continually smother them with gifts, the majority of which they won’t pay much attention to…..instead, it’s important to give them time to express the things they would like, without these wishes being fulfilled immediately.” Psychologies Magazine December 2009 Dossier Giving and Getting Pg 114
As a child, it is important to know the meaning of gratitude, so if it’s not that designer outfit or Nintendo and instead a dress from a high street shop or a board game, take on board the spirit that went into choosing and buying the gift.
Dr Robert Emmons, author of Thanks says;
“Experiencing gratitude can boost our happiness level, improve wellbeing, make us less dependent on material goods and help us enjoy greater fellow feeling and empathy.” Psychologies Magazine December 2009 Dossier Giving and Getting Pg 117
Even more reason to show gratitude and not just for the Christmas season, continue it throughout your everyday life and you will grow as a person.
